O ur Saturday evening was reserved for two weeks ... A rainy and stormy Saturday night here, but we decided to pass our screen, with Daniel Radcliffe and David Yates, who both, would return on experience Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince through an exclusive audio commentary, directed from London and multicast over the world, at least among the owners of a Blu-Ray offering support for the 2.0 profile, called BD-Live . A note that other events have already taken place so for about a year, but due to IP blocking, we French, in theory there had no access. The session called "Live Community Screening" has indeed been the first in the world to be aired in all territories where the Blu-Ray film was available.
Configured our deck is "PCM" or "re-encoded Bitsream" to enjoy live audio commentary live, we connect 17 minutes before the official start of the broadcast, as recommended by the publisher. Once accessed the BD-Live title, from the menu and the option "Express Yourself" is selected, an invitation appears in English. Of course, the editor warned us through email that nothing will be done in French, without any subtitle ... On the screen, ten minutes before the official start of the program, scheduled at 21:00 French time, a button "JOIN" made its appearance, right next to the name of the moderator, under the moniker "dradcliffe". Once pressed, the movie starts, 5.1, and shortly after, a voice audible gives relatively little recent guidance, and announced, every minute, a countdown to the start of broadcast. Everything is relayed on the screen in a chat window, which reproduces verbatim the words of the moderator.
Zero hour arrives six minutes. The deck stops. The film cuts. Black screen ... Shortly after, three voices sing a "hello" group, which form the beginning of the broadcast. The film starts, the chat window is active. At this point, your control over your deck, except for passing a sound track to another, which does not affect the audio commentary. In perfect synchronization with the images that stakeholders visionnent the same time as you, the comments come to life. First regret: the director, David Yates, is suffering, He was replaced by the producer of the latter component. This second Daniel Radcliffe, and the moderator, who very vote, asked the speakers questions submitted by Internet users, which are cited nickname and geographical origin. Thus, some questions came from the United States, others from Brazil, Australia, or even France. The tone is relaxed, the voice very well made, and the warm atmosphere. We regretted the lack of monitoring and feedback between what was happening on the screen, all taking the fast pace of a giant "Q" sometimes relevant, sometimes ridiculous (the favorite drink of the actor , his favorite cricketer ...). Ten minutes later, stakeholders are organizing a big promotion for the Blu-Ray, Daniel Radcliffe confesses discover for the first time. Everyone is surprised (and pleased) to the innovative way that allows BD-Live, anyway, to watch a movie, live, with actor and producer.

After one hour, the movie pauses. Announced by the moderator, it is also followed by the ticker offering a countdown to the return of live. Daniel Radcliffe, obviously a cold, took the opportunity to get a drink, apologizing coughed loudly enough. Note that the movie is paused at a distance from London, and will start again as soon as the received signal. No worries about the reliability of the process, about which we had, we do not hide, many fears. Over two and a half hours apart from a few micro-breaks sound, nothing has disturbed this unique experience that can be reproduced anxious more often.
One worry, however: the noise level of the comment was not high enough, which, with the 5.1 track of the film in the background, made understanding very difficult at times, inaudible even at the most tumultuous scenes. But a parade D system has been found: it was enough to switch to the 5.1 sound track Dutch, lower volume (Warner oblige ...) to find a balance and hearing comfort more acceptable, but not perfect. No way was expected to lower the sound of the film, even if the POP-UP MENU button of the playback deck allowed mute the commentary, or conversely, to activate it. A button "exit" is also present. He exits the session, when technical problem, but it is always possible to reconnect (as we tested), the deck automatically stalling point counter film released in London. Thus, although the start of the program was missed, a connection later is always possible to catch the bandwagon.
On the screen, stenographers transcribe verbatim the words of the protagonists, with more or less success: multiple spelling mistakes ... This is, the grand finale, a form of subtitling to track an almost synchronous-that is said. Sometimes the delay is reported. The team praised the work of the stenographer, who did their best to translate discussions often rapid.
If this comment does not learn much about the film, he deserves to be executed live, without a net, and so this world. The views are linked in some sequences, the trivia abound, all on a very nice, and aided by a very effective technique. Another miracle of the Internet, and a great place for BD-Live, often criticized, rightly, but here we will have offered its best illustration. During the end credits, the moderator allows to scroll the screen, in the text window, dozens of thanks from all over India, France, Yemen, Australia, Russia ... We tried to ask questions, since the webpage opened and enabled for the occasion (address visible on the screen when connecting to the BD-Live Event), but we have not been successful ... In conclusion, difficult to noses up at such a success: friendly in its approach, its implementation dan precise, tough on the field ... The technical editor was able to surprise us, and proposed a real interactive experience, that we long to see reproduced. A very pleasant evening, we were afraid of losing given the usual 'poor' performance of BD-Live, but turned out to be a revelation.
