
U niversal has indeed revealed the birth of an optical disc of a new type. This BD-59 (for 59 gigabytes) can extend the current limit of Blu-Ray 50 GB, in order to add ... a DVD. Instead of two discs in the box, only one is available. This disc "Blu-Ray Combo DVD hybrid" indeed operate four distinct layers: two will be reserved for reading Blu-Ray (two layers of 25 GB each), while the other two will be reserved in DVD mode (two layers of approximately 4.5 GB). Nothing new under the spotlights in all, but is more juicy opportunity for publishers, who pressed for a single disk will always be less expensive than double the disk ...
According to its nature (DVD or Blu-Ray), the turntable will not exploit that flows specific format. This 'technology' had operated in 2007 with the release of various editions in HD-DVD which also included DVD layers.
First films to exploit this 'new': Jason Bourne trilogy, reissued in January, but this time, the films will be available individually. So far, only a box full, containing all the films, and published last year, was marketed. Each film will offer course the magnificent soundtracks DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (vo), and the full supplement cabinet mentioned above.
A question arises, however: the owners of a Blu-Ray have no use for a DVD version of the film, and a DVD player owners prefer to pay less for their issue, unable to exploit the layers of HD Blu-Ray ...
