"A successful mix is not that you notice is the one who is THE good, one whose film needed. If the frames of the film are accurate, neat image, then the sound must go in the same direction, but the best sound is not necessarily the cleanest. If the picture is a little "trash", the sound must be gross, why not just limited technically. One is then led to favor the direct sound, to forget his pride, chasing sides "technicards" (...). The soundtrack to retell the story, convey emotion, be in perfect harmony with the image.

The biggest thing for me is to pull the emotion of the viewer, THE brief realize it takes to mix film ... "

You did not know probably not, but you have necessarily heard his sound work for very many years. This Friday, January 28, Francois Groult is gone, suddenly. He joined Maurice Pialat, he was the mixer and sound engineer of record. Tripling Césarisé (Le Grand Bleu, Joan of Arc, and the diptych Mesrine), he worked for a long time to extend the sound aesthetic of French cinema. Working for the biggest names (Maurice Pialat, who had become his friend, but Brian De Palma, André Téchiné, Diane Kurys, Jean Becker ...), this passionate and its technology was able to follow the development of techniques while never without neglecting the aesthetic side and the imposing dramatic works each more singular than the one before the other.

You have discovered on video, on DTS-Phile, upon delivery of the Cesar for Best Sound for Mesrine in Jean-Francois Richet, while we organized an interview with Alexandre Widmer (see this page ). François Groult also worked to create the AFSI (French Association for his picture) association which aims to develop relationships, exchange information, discuss methods, help solve common problems, monitor progress of the technology and organize meetings between the various stakeholders in the audio chain. Its purpose is to promote and communicate the importance of the contribution of creative and technical professionals in the film and audiovisual production and in related media. It is this association, we know well, which yesterday released the announcement of his death, which plunged the members and all industry professionals in great sadness.

We have not had the chance to meet him in person, but it is a series of email exchanges this summer about a project we are currently going up, which allowed us to discover a demanding artist and integrity, of great wisdom of soul, and an unwavering passion for the world of sound and its techniques. His career, impressive, he has forged, sustained, a true image of sound in the French cinema, image to which he contributed in an exemplary manner, that will endure for generations, of Pialat to Richet, of Téchiné to Smithson, of Besson Pradal.

All our thoughts are with his family, colleagues and friends, to whom we partner.

SYNOPSIS

Since the tragic death of their father during a fire, the two brothers McCaffrey did not follow the same path. True to family tradition, Stephen, the eldest, became one of the most respected firefighters in Chicago. Meanwhile, Brian, the youngest, bourlinguait small work odd jobs. However, he also decided to take the torch. On entering the company, he is greeted warmly by John Adcox, a firefighter friend of his father, but watched with suspicion by Stephen, who doubts his vocation. Tired of this distrust, the young man made off with the detective Donald Rimgale.

Classic from the early 90s, Backdraft has haunted many moviegoers and then cinéphages adolescents. One subject never treated before, signed a score by Hans Zimmer memorable, stunning visual effects in their time ... Nearly twenty years later, still meets this efficiency, while providing a psychological perspective and narrative altogether obsolete but whose bases expressive are still as carriers.

Breton heart and home, wandering in fact, tried by medicine,
passion by journalist, traveler and observer of curiosity, Nicolas
Hulot likes to recall that he "was not born environmentalist, but he is
become. " His journey, fraught with discoveries, experiences and
meetings that led to an across the globe, has gradually
forged his fight for ecology and more generally for a
more humanistic approach in the world.
After a few months in medical school, he held several small
jobs and discovered photography. Göksin Sipahioglu, creator of the agency
SIPA Press trusts him; Nicolas Hulot made his photojournalism
first job. He travels the world and for 5 years and has witnessed
of significant national and international events, particularly in Africa
Southern or South Africa with the events leading up to the end
of apartheid. The picture leads naturally to an interest in the press
written and spoken, and he had the opportunity to go to France Inter. From 1978 to
1987 he was a journalist and producer of several shows. It innovates
in methods of reporting, making himself an actor of adventures that
Live is live with its auditors. Thus he notes some challenges
as the descent of the Zambezi to paddle or sits at the North Pole
geographically with the first single-engine aircraft. In 1987, chance of
life leads to the broadcasting, at TF1. A simple experiment which
should last a few months, and that turns into a real
slice of life. For 22 years, Nicolas Hulot was successively
producer and presenter of programs "Ushuaia, the magazine
Far "(1987-1995)," Opération Okavango "(1996-1997) and finally
"Ushuaia Nature" (since 1998).

The past, surprised, or rather astonished to find that the generic displays an image framed by 4/3 (with two black bars at the side but unexplained presence justified ...), the film finally begins with the ratio 16/9 and 2.35 Scope. Already available in HD-DVD without special verve, Backdraft has a Blu-Ray transfer of good quality, which strives to restore the warmth of each image and the color temperature deliberately ocher, which bases the bulk of visual style of the film. In this sense, colors, and color is accurate everywhere show the intentions of Ron Howard, even offering an extended color ever seen so far, including skin tones, slightly too saturated. Otherwise, the image displays into its own silver, but has a level of detail and finish of the definition somewhat limited. The master does not seem to have been renovated in proper form, even if the transfer HD manages to draw out of the game The image shows sometimes poorly defined, granular, and appears to have a certain simplicity, without disappoint. The contrasts, however, cut each scene carefully particularly valuable even if they sometimes lack that extra dimension that would have been doing all the difference. Besides some dust-film and other small tasks, the image is stable, solid and detailed evidence, if any were needed, that even if all could be further improved, it is nonetheless the best incarnation of video Ron Howard film to date, especially when we know that the DVD edition of the most widely distributed around the world was limited to 4/3.

Two years before the arrival of DTS audio codec in theaters (1993), and a year before the marketing of Dolby Digital (1992), Backdraft was born. Ron Howard has managed to find the greatest experts of his time, some (if not all) would help to harden the tone and sound to participate in the development of sound film in North American subsequent years. So, Randy Thom, Gary Rydstrom Gary Summers and especially (credited as Sound Designer and Mixer) were recruited to compose the soundscape of the film so sophisticated. Backdraft was presented theatrically in Dolby Stereo, and this edition Blu-Ray, as was the case previously on DVD, has made a multi-channel 5.1, obviously remixed elements from the moose, which were extrapolated and re-enacted . If the main stages impose only a relative noise, and have a sound set up mainly frontal and stéréphonique, always dynamic and open, rendering the dialogues of excellent craftsmanship, it is however the sequences fire that take maximum advantage of multi-channel sound. Logically, the dynamics of three good climbs notches, and the sound space tridimensional widens dramatically and agile, while offering a vivid contrast and contrasted with the rest of the film. The unforgettable sound design by Gary Rydstrom, who worked at acoustically customize the fire, which moves in space so animal sounds with raucous, underhanded, liquids and "fans" will show rave. Every breath is seen projected obediently to the five cardinal points of the installation, supported by an extensive use of the subwoofer, which delivers a serious under-stretched most of the time, powerfully expressive. The fire initially occupies a presence on the center channel, before being multiplexed and ventilated on the front left side and back on the scene, which has a volume level often surprising, and intelligibility flawless. This study proposes a crosstalk, delivering an amazing channel separation, which led to the creation of a soundstage both wide, detailed, realistic and obvious.

Sounds mobility poses no trouble when the action sequences, which provide a dynamic incendiary coupled with a surprisingly detailed spectral rendering and crystalline. The volume released back on the scene, we would have liked more participatory on the other sequences, appears finally to his best advantage, and describes the falling objects in all kinds, yelling / breathing flames, the crackling structures and movement of smoke so often circular and panoramic. During these spectacular fire sequences, the soundscape is transparent and shows active, displaying an undeniable physiological character, describing arabesques and sounds that evolve over the movement of characters on the screen. Write a real sound, with very specific acoustic details, which reflect the rigor and inventiveness of the work of sound engineers. The usual sound signatures of Gary Rydstrom show themselves evident, and managing the global spatialization audible even exceeds that of many contemporary production. The frequency response area breathable medium, while externalizing readily on the high end, which remains sharp and bright, particlièrement directional and open when its "presence" is required.

The codec DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 digs away with the clear position DTS 5.1 mi flow of VF, offering more substantial texture and a spatial and volumetric rendering of the dynamic incommensurate. Thickness and directional sounds are thus optimized in all circumstances, making the HD lossless audio track almost suffocating multichannel activity, where required. Finally, the DTS-HD track perfectly reproduces the sound environment typical of the 90s, highlighting each creative intent, and providing all these sounds created, edited and mixed by expert hands full range of expressive potential. Far from the anthology certainly improved on many areas, but overall strong impact and presence, this soundtrack is returned sees so clear and ambitious, with the volume, agility, cloth and sound material to spare. The surprise is undeniable, as long as we pass on some sequences unconvincing. Overall, music, effects and atmospheres emerge with a rather astonishing efficiency, to which the codec DTS-HD Master Audio breathes really startling acoustic dimension.

"The box Star Wars Blu-ray will contain six feature films Star Wars action using the best presentation of the image and audio. "George Lucas

    Capture

Our you announced there some months, but the ultimate confirmation appeared just yesterday, live from CES in Las Vegas. So, here comes the news that everyone was waiting with great impatience. It is confirmed validated, official ... formalized etc. At a recent convention in Orlando (held in August 2010), George Lucas announced in person the birth, Blu-Ray, the saga of the most famous of history of cinema: Star Wars. Episodes 1-6 will be presented by Fox in September 2011, in an unprecedented video quality, maximum, with full optimization of the image and sound. That is to say: 1080p video masters restored, proposed soundtrack in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (in 6.1 or 7.1 Why Discrete?) Refounded (24 Bit, probably reworked and remixed). A real first in the history of video editing of these films: they came in DTS, which is offered in more lossless audio (so no loss). Unpublished anthology ... and simply wonderful. So far, the only version of the movie that circulated in DTS format was released in the theaters. Never before home video any medium whatsoever was presented first or second trilogy in this format. Repaired error, therefore, in less than a year. Another important detail: each disc is overseen by George Lucas himself, and each film will be granted a video bitrate of up to 40 Mbps willingly on a Blu-Ray 50 GB

"Blu-ray is definitely the best way to see Star Wars at home in high definition quality pristine. The picture quality and sound films has never been better. "

Supplements unpublished, of course, will make their appearance in the heart of this package which should be reflected, soon, leads all sales, not hesitating, at the same time, to instantly generate a new trading record. To quote the creator, Lucas, "I wish to say that Blu-Ray landed this year ... but they will arrive next year." A new literally deafening, but leaves a bitter taste, and an observation: now that the saga is announced and its release date confirmed, that he remains on Blu-Ray to generate both waiting (s)? To this day, if we know anything yet e content of supplements, a figure was announced: 30 hours. This is the amount of total hourly supplements, presented on three different disks. Three editions are asleep and already planned: one for each trilogy (original trilogy and "prequels"), and an overall editin offer the entire saga.
